Class News for the month of March(marzo):
In 5th grade we are learning Spanish adjectives. The students have been writing sentences using adjectives and asking and answering activities orally in class using adjectives. We will read a poem in Spanish where adjectives are included. They will be able to read and translate the poem and then create their own poems using adjectives that describe themselves. These poems will be presented orally in class.
In 6th grade we are currently learning vocabulary for places to go after school. We will read short dialogues in class orally and translate them. We will also watch a video where vocabulary for places to go will be included and answer short questions about what we saw (these short videos are in Spanish and I am very impressed that they understand most of what is being said). We will also ask and answer questions orally in class choosing volunteers to orally speak and translate responses.
In seventh grade we are currently learning the different uses of the verbs SER and ESTAR which mean "to be." These verbs are very important in the Spanish language and are used often. The students will be able to conjugate these verbs in sentences and know when to use each verb by referring to the rules we have learned in class for each of the verbs. In March we will also learn vocabulary for objects found in the bedroom and the colors in Spanish. We will review pronunciation and meaning of vocabulary and watch a short video between two friends describing their bedrooms (this video will be in Spanish to reinforce vocabulary usage).
The 8th grade is currently working on a project where they have to describe a place they visited and what they did there. They will then write a short paragraph using the information from their word web and vocabulary we have learned. These projects will be presented orally in class.
Class News for the month of February (febrero):
5th Grade:In fifth grade we are beginning a project on activities we like to do. The students will create a venn diagram and include activities they like and dislike with illustrations. They will also write short sentences about their activities. Pronunciation is important in Spanish, therefore, the students will present their projects orally in class translating what they wrote. In February we will learn vocabulary for Spanish adjectives describing ourselves. We will write short sentences using adjectives, read short dialogues and watch short videos in Spanish where adjectives are used.
In 6th grade we are learning additional vocabulary for food. In this chapter we concentrate on healthy and unhealthy choices. We will talk and write about food, health, and exercise. Short dialogues will be read and discussed in class. We will also watch some short videos about the food choices some friends make. These videos are in Spanish with short responses after we watch them. The students are doing very well understanding the topics we watch. The sixth graders did a fantastic job on their food project. They had to create a menu using examples for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
In 7th grade we are learning vocabulary for table setting and physical characteristics. We have read and translated short dialogues using these vocabulary words. The students will be able to listen to, read, and write sentences about information on restaurant meals, services, and physical characteristics of family members. We will also learn how to conjugate the verb venir which means "to come." The students created a family project describing three family members. I like this project because it gives me an opportunity to learn a little about their families and to see pictures that they bring in. Their Spanish pronunciation is coming along very nicely. They had to orally present their projects in class and did a fantastic job. In seventh grade conversation is very important. I am glad to see that they are more comfortable speaking in class.
In 8th grade we are learning how to conjugate verbs in the past tense. The students have written sentences conjugating verbs that end in AR, asked and answered questions using these examples in the past tense, and read short paragraphs where they had to conjugate the verbs in the past tense. In February we will also learn the direct object pronouns in Spanish. Direct objects tell who or what receives the action of the verb. They will be able to write and translate sentences using direct objects.
Spanish Class News for the month of December(diciembre):5th Grade:In December we will learn vocabulary for activities we like and dislike. We will watch short videos about this topic, write and translate sentences using these vocabulary words, and orally read short dialogues using activities we like and dislike. A project on this topic will be discussed and done in school.6th Grade:Sixth grade is learning how to conjugate verbs that end in ER and IR. We will learn the rules on conjugation for these verbs, write sentences using these verbs, ask and answer questions conjugating these verbs in pairs and orally read short dialogues using these verbs. In December we will also create a project using food which is the topic we have already learned. This will be done in school.7th Grade:Seventh grade is learning vocabulary for family members. We will watch a video on a birthday party celebrated in a Spanish community (la quinceanera). We will also read and translate dialogues in pairs using family members.8th Grade:In December we will learn vocabulary for stores and gifts we can purchase in these stores. We will watch short videos of friends shopping in a mall and what they buy. We will also listen to audio activities using vocabulary we are learning. We will also learn the past tense of verbs that end in AR.___________________________________________________________________________Spanish Class News for the month of November(noviembre):5th Grade:In fifth grade we are learning vocabulary for classroom objects and how to include Spanish definite articles which are el or la, los or las (the). We will also learn vocabulary for days and months of the year and weather conditions. We will hear audio exercises and create short sentences and dialogues using these vocabulary words. The fifth grade did a great job on their monster project labeling body parts in Spanish.6th Grade:In sixth grade we are going to learn the topic of food which is a favorite of my students. We will hear audio exercises using food, watch short videos on this theme and create a project using food. Oral activities will also be done in class which are important to enforce pronunciation of the Spanish language.7th Grade:In seventh grade we will learn how to conjugate verbs that end in ER and IR. Examples conjugating these verbs will be done in class as well as creating sentences using verbs that end in ER and IR. We will also begin the topic of the family. We will listen to audio exercises using family members, create short dialogues and watch short videos on the family. Seventh Grade also created a project using classroom objects. They did an excellent job.8th Grade:In eighth grade we are learning how to conjugate the verbs pensar (to think), querer(to want), and preferir (to prefer). The students are able to ask and answer questions using these verbs and vocabulary for activities we like to do. They did a fantastic job on their clothing project. They had to pretend to go to a clothing store and ask the clerk for four articles of clothing, its color, and how much it cost. We will also learn body parts. A project on the body parts will be discussed and done in school. Students will look for a "monster" type character and label all body parts in Spanish.6th Grade:In sixth grade we are learning classroom objects. We have read, translated, and created dialogues using classroom objects. We will then learn the verb estar which means to be and is a very important verb in the Spanish language. In October we will discuss the plural of nouns and articles using examples of vocabulary words we have learned.7th Grade:In seventh grade we have learned vocabulary for classroom objects, locations of objects in the classroom, classes we take in school and the periods. Sentences, dialogues and short audio exercises have been done in class. We will review food and create a menu as a project in school.8th Grade:In eighth grade we are working on a clothing project. The students are searching for articles of clothing and creating a dialogue between themselves and the store clerk on how much the item costs and its color.___________________________________________________________________________Spanish Class News for the month of September (septiembre):5th Grade:In fifth grade we will begin with the topic of greeting each other at different times of the day. We will also be able to introduce ourselves to others. These exercises will be done orally in class in pairs. It is a good way to begin conversing in Spanish. In September we will also learn numbers up to 100, how to tell time in Spanish, and body parts.6th Grade:In sixth grade we will begin with the topic of the classroom.We will learn vocabulary for classroom objects, listen to and read conversations and notes about school, and talk and write about classes, classrooms, and where things are located. We will also identify cultural practices viewed in an authentic video about school homework.7th Grade:In seventh grade we will begin with activities we like and dislike, adjectives, class periods and classes we have and describe objects in the classroom. We will read, translate, and hear short dialogues using these topics. Conversations using these topics will be done orally in class in pairs.8th Grade:In eighth grade we will begin with the topic on clothing. We will listen to conversations and read about clothes and shopping. We will exchange information while purchasing an item of clothing. This will be done in pairs and discussed orally in class. We will also be able to identify cultural practices in an authentic video about shopping.
